FPS genre arcade-o-nized.

The age of darkness

Or just usual, modern, boring shooters that we have. I've had enough of arcade gameplay in my military modern FPS games. Insurgency, made by indie devs, took a nice hit on IMPROVING (yes, improving ffs) the FPS mechanics. It's idea was very simple yet so well known: no visual support and "hardcore mode" only.

Twitch shooter?

Yes and no. Both. Why? Of course there is some twitch shooting within the game. But isn't it like that in real life in CQB? Of course it is. Now, before CoD fans say how real the CoD game's are, let me say a few things straight. Twitch shooting is important in CQB, however, what really matters on long range is your own ability to spot and carefully place a bullet on your target. What's the difference some may ask. Good question.

The difference is, it's really hard to spot anyone from afar, and even if, it's even harder to aim with provided scopes that usually are to max x7 magnification. Oh but battlefield has even x12 and x16 magnification scopes! Yes. However... It's not realistic. It has bullet drop, sure, but it feels completely different than Insurgency.

Another example- Titanfall. There's a bit of jumping skill involved to maintain momentum and be swift and agile. Yet, still, Titanfall has close experience to BF and Cod's than any other games do. Why does it happen?

No pression.

That's how. There is no stress or pression on a player, he's not making a huge difference to his team, however in games like Insurgency or Verdun, you can do alot to support your team on your own. You need to play as a team. Battlefield series successfully escaped team-play since the BF3 release. That's why I prefer BC2 over the newer bf's. I don't want to be a rambo, I don't want to show off how awesome I am. I want to cooperate and have fun playing with players that actually help eachother out not just pretend like nobody else exists unless you need a medic or ammo. True, Verdun has none of these, but it has different rank system, where squad commander is vital to the game itself. It can order move orders, bring gas onto enemy trenches or mortars aswell.. You feel like you're part of something. We don't get that these days. Sad.

So, where is it going?

Well, EA has Battlefield: Bad Company 3 and Star Wars: Battlefront III up their sleeves. I don't like that. I can tell right now that it's going to be arcade'y as hell. Was Battlefront arcade'y? Maybe a tiny bit, but still you couldn't pull the game only by yourself. Coop had a huge meaning back in the days. Today? Hopefully they will bring it back soon, or dark ages will be set upon FPS shooters. We will have only indies if that happens.
