An unexpected gem.

Accidents happen

However, they are not necessarily bad occurrences. Thanks to Humble Bundle Monthly I have picked up Stardew Valley. It was a total surprize for me, as I just forgot to cancel my monthly payment.
Ever since this game came out I was very skeptical about it. Me, playing a farming game? No way. For some inexplicable reason though, I have decided to add it to my library and try it out. May I add, that on the launch day of the game, I did "feel" the "hype" for it and all good reviews and videos did convince to try it out. I never have bought it though nor tried it out in any way and after a couple of days I had forgotten about it.

I was so wrong.

I have almost missed out completely on a great, great game. Enough about the mystical chance of randomness. What makes the game so great?

Divided interests, socialization, pacing.

First and foremost, the most important piece of this game is the pacing. You will start with "just tools" and you progress over time. Overall there's 1+4 qualities, where 1 is the standard without a prefix of any sort or material.
The fact that you have to pay gold in order to upgrade your tools, does set the pacing in quite a nice timeline. Farming certain resources does not provide that much of progress.

While game has numerous skills, don't worry! It makes sure you will train every single one of it over time. Sure, you can without question focus every skill, however it is not quite efficient. Thanks to skills and perks, craftables locked behind them, game sets its pace for the game alongside the story and season system.

If not for the skills, game most certainly would become very boring after just a couple of hours.

However, there's one more pacing system that slows your progress a little. That's the Community Centre. In short: you have to forage, gather, obtain certain items that require objects from certain season. This locks the game and paces it out in an additional, story way, while skill system is more of a character progression pacing. It can be a little irritating at times, for sure, especially if you do not remember what you are supposed to gather/focus, as if for example, you will not gather one singular crop this season, you will be forced to wait for next season to plant and collect certain crop. It usually unlocks new locations that are crucial to progress in the Centre itself.

TLDR: Pacing is set by skill, season and Community Centre system. It stops, locks you at certain points so you are unable to power through a part of the game. However, if you miss a single thing, you will get stuck one of certain points for a longer of time, however you can still make progress in different branches.

Socialization

In short, you can date, marry, romance with certain characters and gain friendship in order to be granted certain bonuses, for example new recipes for certain meals. It is not crucial, however it is still recommended to socialize with NPC for bonuses. It will unlock special quests as well as events to provide  background on certain characters or to bound player to the NPC. However, NPC interactions, besides the events, are usually dull. Most NPC's for example share the response for receiving a gift they like which breaks all depth that was given to this point.

Married or not, does not affect the game in a very major way, unless you want to have kids. Yes, that's possible, but come on, why would you?

Not without problems

I'd like to mention a few problems that occur very, very often for me while playing the game.

The biggest problem here is: very unresponsive movement and action. It comes all to this:
When you stand surrounded by crops, ores etc. it works fine, where you point it automatically turns your character to interact with that object and comply a certain action.

However, while you're "in combat", as in "holding/equipping/using" a weapon, this does not work that way. You attack the way you are currently facing. I do not see a problem with not being able to strafe and attack, as attacks occur in 1 animation, but not being able to swiftly change direction by pointing your mouse in a different way, makes the combat feel cheap.

That's not the end though. You cannot see any bars or countown for how long the attack or any action animation takes.  So, as an example, you're mining some ore and suddenly a wild group of bats show up. You will have problems to switch from your pickaxe to your sword, if this action takes less than about 0.8-1 second. You cannot do it. You will have to wait a second in order to be able to switch your gear! But still, you will have to change direction manually with wasd and again, this, if the action is quick enough on your side, will not happen! Makes it even worse when you are actually surrounded, it's just cheap and bad.

You thought that's all? Nope! Every weapon has one additional secondary attack or other addition. I prefer swords, as on RMB you can defend yourself from incoming enemies and damage for a very short period of time. I've been in numerous situations, where it was required from me to change from my current gathering gear, swap to my sword and block. 60% of the time I was  not even able to swap because of fast reaction but if I did I had maybe 10% chance of successfully blocking the attack, as again, the delay is unacceptable.

Unless you have really, really good gear, it makes visits to the mine a rather unpleasant experience. There are times where the game throws 8 bats at you at once. It results in very, very cheap deaths as you know your reaction time is better than this, and you should not be able to die because simply the game is extremely unresponsive for fast actions. I do not care that combat is not the focus of the game, it should not be this bad and this cheap to die, just because the game engine limits your potential.

All that said

I did quite give up on it. Why? After 1st year I've found myself begin in a stagnating stance. You see, this game is all about the busywork. You even have to pet your farm animals every single day. Let them, let them in etc. In theory your wife can pet the animals. But for the most part, not all of them will be pet, so "just to be sure" you have to pet them all anyway... Sprinklers are extremely useful when making a farm, it sure does take out tons of minutes of your precious time. I think Stardew Valley is a good game, but for people who have little or no time (or study something for that matter) is not a great game, as it can be stressful and if you forget to do a certain task, it will not hold the progress but rather erase some of your wasted time.
If you have alot of time to spare, this game is most certainly for you.

A waste of time - TDU2

Fun? More like a chore.

A small disclaimer here: I do not say that the following game is terrible, however it is packed with time consuming tasks and "fake" difficulty, therefore playing the game is quite a chore.

Hard, easy, casual?

Here's the golden answer: neither. Games should not rely on being one thing out of many (looking at you, Dark Souls), but preferably should include a good gameplay loop that can be both relaxing and fun. For instance, take Dark Souls. Buggy, ugly and I might even say dull and unresponsive game. Why is it popular? Because it's "hard".

Well if you don't have a problem spamming 1 dodge and 1 attack button all the time (and at the same time you find that rewarding somehow) then congratulations, this game is most certainly for you. I like games that present me with different challenges through the plot or gameplay itself. It does not have to be easy, but the need of a new approach to different problem is what always drags me into games. This is why some shooters are popular. Yes, you have same weapons that work best for you etc. but you can change your tactics. If you do not do that then most likely you've played too much of Call of Duty.

No more digressions

Test Drive 2: Unlimited is the name of the game. I used to enjoy it. Now I despise it. Why you may ask?

This game is filled with stupid things like obtaining a racing license. Just because. Oh yes you can drive this classical car but this one has a little tiny bit more horsepower and overall is better so you need to pass another test. Why for the f****g sake?!

This is not enough. This game is super easy, especially when you turn off all the assists. However it dumps on you these time challenges that at times are extremely ridiculous! There's nothing more frustrating than these time challenges. I can win any race with many seconds of lead, but these are always a chore to finish.

Plus, getting money is a very time consuming task. 30-40 minutes of racing to get enough money to buy one car? Sure! No thank you, I rather do something else and a little more productive than drive around one or two circles being 15+ seconds ahead of bots.

I do understand this isn't stricte racing game. It is about driving around having fun and admiring the landscape.  I don't find it that intimidating to do so, especially when it beeps every 5 miles because of some crashed car or "you have to take a picture" "quest". It used to be good up to the point where everything seemed to be a chore.

I don't like my games to be a chore. I like to have fun and do some progress. TDU2 is full of chores.

eGPU with lenovo i5 X220-EXP GDC Beast + 560Ti +4Gb ram

The idea

I have to admit, when I've heard that my X220 with i5 and iGPU can play modern games I was thrilled. I began to search about this eGPU thing and discovered quite a community of users who buy buissness class laptops and then mount a eGPU unit, usually with 2gb vRAM cards. My setup, as stated in the title, is powered by a dell 220W power supply.

The story is, I bought the EXP GDC in an online chineese  shop called banggood, as it was the cheapest version available at the time and shipping free, plus no toll fee like from some US orders. It came with the wrong cable (PCI-E) instead of the one I ordered (Expresscard). Wrote to customer support and bang, got shipped a proper cable. I began to fiddle with it and.. it didn't work. Rumbled through forums, changed my laptops specs aswell as the OS (W7 currently, suck it 10) and it still was not working. After a LONG time, I think 2 months, from the original order, I wrote an email - I had speculations about the Expresscard cable they've sent me. After a quick email exchange, they've sent me another Expresscard cable. It works!

Not without its flaws

The biggest problem is in all previous and current V7 versions. Nvidia Kernel stops working. You play a game, and it basically shuts it down or your screen goes black as the drivers stop working. Sometimes when you fire up the game again and play, there will be no error and you will be able to enjoy the game. However, in most of the cases it means you have to restart your laptop entirely. Usually one restart is enough to make it work. Please do note that this driver crash will occur usually when you're in game for about 30 minutes (differs from each game and each time, may even be instant).

It happend to me numerous times, even on the right expresscard version and working Gen 2 cable. It still does happens from time to time, usually  in games from Battlefield series.

Performance

Now something that most of you are probably interested in and rightfully so. First of all I would like to say that it varies from Internal or External setup. For mobile purposes I have internal setup and I've been able to achieve so far 60+ fps in following games:
  • Battlefields - all series usually mid-low settings with 100% res rendering
  • Warframe - very good performance
  • Doom 3
  • Overwatch - stable ~75 fps
  • Counter Strike: Global Offensive all on low with at least 80fps
And there's more to come in the future. However, these are raw, simple stats, I'm going to be recording stats for specific games using Rivia Tuner and MSI afterburner and post them all in here for your liking, so you can see the full result. In short future I am willing to test the shadowplay to post the results on youtube, however I will need a bigger external drive.

Stay tuned for more info!

Burgers. I'd like a refund please. It's not even a game.

New idea for posts

Alright. So I got to play quite a few games that well.. Suck. From now on, No Go will be a new label for pretty bad games. No pictures, no long words or anything like that. Just short brutal truth.

Starting.... TODAY!

Burgers. They give you cancer and tighten your bowels.

I haven't quite gotten any of thse by literally playing this two year old hobo's belch, but here are my thoughts about the game:

Cons:
  • Dull.
  • Short.
  • Unoriginal.
  • Progression system is pointless.
  • No replay values.
  • Some modes do not work.
  • It's bad.
  • Really bad.
  • Better donate that money to some charity or even buy a EA game.
  • Boring.
  • Bugged.
  • Overpriced.
  • Annoying controls.
  • Annoying graphics and visuals.
  • Controls are here to torment your soul for ages. Even with a controller.
  • Selling your soul to the Devil.
  • It takes 745 MB space on your HDD.  That's 190 720 Microsoft Word documents damnit! (on my pc average is about 4kb)
  • Aliens. Cause F*ck you!
  • No artistic cohesion. Even Ben Affleck in Star Wars playing a rogue jedi Jawa that becomes the most powerful fence painter ever by eating tacos has more artistic cohesion than this pile of 200 year old yoghurt cake.
Pros:
  • Steam trading cards.

Loot Hunter. Yes, no pictures.

Title: Loot Hunter
Genre: Action, Adventure, RPG, Simulation,Strategy
Developer: Rake in Grass
Publisher: Rake in Grass
Release Date: 23 Jan, 2015
Platform: PC

A bit of a letdown

I'll keep it short. Once I have started it, the game immediately reminded me of something quite old. Tortuga - Pirates of the New World . Oh boy I was happy something similar came out. Until I've started to play the game.

One big disappointment

First of all, there's quite no combat. Combat is focused around "match 3" idea. Love it or hate it. Personally I hate it, it makes the "combat" luck based. Oh, by the way, if you match 4 or 2 different 3's, you have another turn.

Personally I dislike that system. But wait, there's trading right? Yep! It's super simplistic! There's no clear needs indicator. Nope. Once you go into a town it will display a few goods (or none) to buy/sell with browny/yellowy text. Once you click it it says: It's a good price to buy/sell! And that's it. No money problems at all, you just wander from one direction to another. Same comes to missions. Kill 2 pirates. Bring 20 iron. Get that rum to my brother etc. You also don't pay your crew ( I guess you're a one-man pirate/whatever) and that means that just by cruising around, there's no negative effects.

You also have levels within the game. How do they work you might ask? I have no idea. You gather experience points, which take your level up, but you also gather land. Yes, land. For quests and such you can get some acres of land. Not like you can build anything on said land. Or get money off from it. Or like anything. It's a mystical gaze of nothingness swallowed by black shrouds of doing nothing. Quite odd one might say.

This takes me to the point of ship and ship customization. Let's throw it a quickie. Can you form fleets? No. Can you upgrade your ship? Yes. 3 times. You can finish on galleon which has 2k hp and quite some firepower. By winning sea battles you can get magical loot and items that boost your ships stats. That's basically it. Oh and AI can form fleets. Only you can't.

AI is dumb. All they can do is fire at you. Nothing else. It's not a challange at all.

Actually, this is the whole game. It brings me to one point: That there is no point in playing it. No story, hell, there is no ending. You can go on forever.

Conclusion

It is a fun game but I do not see a point in playing it. I have wasted 10 hours to come up with that conclusion.

Buy it very cheap and play only to waste time, literally.

OH and there is no pathfinding. Good luck, Davy Jones.
